Group Collaboration
The Geek Squad
It took us a long time to decide on what we were going to do for our group project. We were able to communicate through text messages, email, and Google Docs. With our busy schedules, we were able to meet only a few times in person, but were able to chat a lot through Google Docs and texts. Google Hangout is something that I had not used before- so I set up a group with my group members, but we were not able to chat due to conflicting schedules. We were excited about making a Prezi, this was an application that we were not familiar with. We hope that you like our final project!

Revised Post #12- (My answers)
---The assignment I created---
As a future Health Education teacher, do you think that this video promotes the importance of Health in everyday life? I believe that this video promotes the importance of Health in everyday life because Health really actually is a part of life. We have to make Health decisions everyday, and the way we take care of our bodies is essential to our well-being.
Taylor also talks about how we should incorporate Health in all subjects. Do you agree or disagree? As a Health Education major, I do agree that we should incorporate Health in all subjects. Whether we are talking about nutrition, hygiene, anatomy, or anything else- students should be reminded of how important Health is.
2.) Do you agree with Taylor on the issue of adults needing to be a good example? Why or why not? I agree. I think that adults have a great influence in children and other adults. A family where the mom and dad eat healthy sets a good example for the children, and the children going to school with healthy lunches makes a great witness to other students. It is a chain effect.

Engaging in an E-Media Fast-
Harder than I thought it would be...
For this assignment, I was not able to use any kind of technology for 24 hours. I was able to cheat a bit, because part of my job in the afternoons is to answer phones and requires me to work on a computer. So.....Ironically, at home this assignment was fairly easy. The day before I started this activity, my house was broken into. The thieve(s) stole everything from TVs to golf clubs. This left me going to a house without any technology per say. This starts my story.... here we go....
Left only with a cell phone, I turned it off and started my day. As I was driving to school, I wondered if my husband was trying to tell me something important, or of he was sending me sweet texts throughout the morning..ha. However, I did tell him that I would be turning my phone off today, so he knew the game plan. I did keep my cell phone with me just in case I had an emergency. Throughout the day I was proud that I did not use my cell phone.
The break-in of my home did make this activity very easy, I had time to read and clean the house, and I had a very nice time! I guess you could say that I had a lot of help from the burglars that raided my home.. ha ha. You really do have to find humor in life- I do. Throughout this activity, I was able to see many things. #1- Material things are not everything, but we really do depend on technology for many things. #2- I would get frustrated when I could not call anyone on my cell phone. #3- I see that sometimes we need to relax and enjoy the bare necessities of life. I can't help but to think of the song............
When I think about my students and how they have grown up with technology all around them, I can see where they would get frustrated in a classroom without technology. I know that students (including myself) always have the urge to text in class, and that is only natural- since we text practically all day. I plan to incorporate technology into my classroom, and use it to the benefit of the students- but not worship it.

Final Report on my PLN
After developing an on-going Personal Learning Network, I am excited about how beneficial this will be in my career as a student, and as an educator. As a Health Education major, I have compiled all of my resources into a category called Health and Physical Education. While Comprising a list and resources of past and current educators and websites, I have a resource list that can very easily be contacted.
Email, Facebook, and Twitter are the main contact resources for the people that make up my PLN. Searching for these resources has not been easy, but I know where to find most of these people (in person). I decided to make my PLN a "community" network- comprised of people that are working and living here in Mobile. I believe that this will allow me to collaborate with others that are in the area.
Specific titles of people who make up my Health PLN are:
* My past Physical Education teachers: Elementary, Middle, and High School.
* My past dance teachers: From 2 studios here in Mobile.
* Current dance teacher/professor here at USA
* Professors here at USA in the health/PE dept.
* Physical and Occupational Therapists at the Orthopaedic Group here in Mobile.
* Many cheerleading coaches/dance coaches teaching in MCPSS.
* Many Athletic Trainers in MCPSS.

This week I am assigned to Beth Knittle’s Blog, Beth’s Thoughts on Technology in the Classroom. She did not have a recent post for this week, so I went back in time and found a post to comment on. The post that I found was The Web Clutter Free. Beth mentioned that she supports teachers who encourage web content with students with special needs. In my comment, I shared an experience that I had with an Occupational Therapist last year in the school system. My comment:
Hi Beth!
My name is Lindsay Curtis, and I am visiting your blog again this week! (I am from EDM 310 at the University of South Alabama). I decided to go back in time on your posts so I could read more of your articles. I have never heard of viewpure before reading this, buit it sounds really helpful. I also like what you said about encouraging teachers to use web content with students with special needs. I recently observed in a school with an Occupational Therapist that took her iPad to work with her. She let the students play games that worked on fine- motor coordination as well as educational activities. I am a believer that students learn best when they are having fun and are engaged in what they are doing! Have a great week! Thanks for your post!
C4T #4 Post #2
This week I commented on Beth's most recent post, on Patriot's Day. Beth cited some sources on the American Revolution, and I told her that I would be referring my brother-in-law to her post for the resources. My post is below:
Hi Beth!
It’s Lindsay Curtis again, from the University of South Alabama EDM 310 class! My brother-in-law is a History teacher and I will be sending him a link to this post! He would love to read this. As an Education major, I want to be able to think out of the box to find resources to better inform and engage my students. Thank you for the info! Have a great week!

Progress Report on Final Project:
After brainstorming, I have thought of a possible video for the final project. I don't want to expose all the info.. haha. However, it does involve my future as an educator, and how I will use everything that I have learned in EDM 310 and apply it for the sake of the students. Details of this idea are humorous, being that the video will be set in future-times. More planning to come!

Special/Additional Post
Creativity and Curiosity: My Thoughts - Special Post #12A.
I think that schools in the United States systematically destroy and also promote creativity in students. The reason I say that is because in some areas of the classroom, curiosity is encouraged, and creativity is rewarded. I feel that subjects that keep true to creativity as it's core do a great job at promoting the curiosity that they are intended, such as Art, Drama, etc. However, some subjects do not encourage thinking of that sort. In some traditional classrooms the teacher is the way and only way for information in the classroom. In this setting, the students are seen as not bringing any prior experiences and knowledge into the classroom.
On the matter of schools killing the creativity in the classroom, I think that the teacher is the one that holds the key as to why this is so. I would question the teacher's mission for teaching. Does he/she want her students to learn, and be able to apply what they have learned in life, or does the teacher want to simply fill the students head with information- passively. I would take a look at the priorities of the educator at hand. I feel that a curriculum can be developed that increases the curiosity of students by encouraging more research on a topic, and open/broad projects on the subject where the students can let their interests and creativity shine. It is possible!
I think that a teacher's actions can indeed increase the curiosity of students. The attitude of the teacher influences the attitude of the students. My favorite class so far here at South has been an Anthropology class taught by Dr. Mohberg. I couldn't believe how excited he was every time he came to lecture- it caused me to be excited and curious to see what we would be discussing next. I consider myself to be creative person, but one thing that I feel would help me to be more creative would just be to be given more opportunity in my classes. Teachers should be more broad on a topic/project, but yet have specific guidelines.
Write an essay addressing these questions and post it on your blog. Use this as your Title: Creativity and Curiosity: My Thoughts - Special Post #12A.

This week, I am visiting Jackson’s blog again! This is the second of three comments that I will post on this cool kid’s blog. This week he posted about the Holocaust. He gave some facts about Aushwitz, and Nelly Toll. Below is my comment:
Jackson,
Hi! I am visiting your blog this week again! I see that you have posted about the Holocaust. I learned about that time in history, and it really was a terrible time. I have also talked to my Grandfather, and he gave me some insight on what happened. I have also read about Nelly Toll. The Holocaust is a very interesting subject to research- but it sure is a sad one. Great post!
Talk to you next week!

First Graders in Mrs. Cassidy’s Class
The video of Mrs. Cassidy’s class was so cute! Seeing the kids interacting and sharing their experiences in the class with technology was so much fun to watch. I am glad to be a part of our C4K assignments!
Skype Interview with Kathy Cassidy
After watching the 2010 Skype interview with Mrs. Cassidy, I see that this woman has been using technology in her classroom for many years. She started out with just a few computers in her classroom- but they were not able to have programs on them. With this, Mrs. Cassidy learned how to make web pages, and to blog. She Incorporated these things into her classroom- and it has been a success! The questions that arose in this Skype interview were very helpful to my knowledge in being a technologically sound educator. Mrs. Cassidy sees the importance of technology in the classroom. She believes that every teacher must be technologically sound. Teachers need to keep up with what is happening. She encourages all students to develop their own social networks. I plan to incorporate social media and blogs in my classroom. One thing that caught my attention in this interview was when Mrs. Cassidy said that the blogs and social media were very helpful for teachers. I plan to involve parents in what is going on on my classroom, and for communication purposes. Mrs. Cassidy was a great example of an educator that sees the importance of technology in the classroom.

Do you Teach or do you Educate?
After watching the youtube video, Do you Teach or do you Educate? I am excited to see my future as an EDUCATOR. I am a health education major, and I plan to coach also. I will strive to guide my students and be a mentor- not just a "teacher". I look back at the educators that have influenced me over the years, and I see that they all had one thing in common...passion and respect for what they were teaching. There is nothing like sitting in a classroom hearing someone talk passionately about a subject. I will strive in my health education field to value and respect the importance of fitness, nutrition, hygiene, and well-being.
I want my classroom to be my student's classroom, a place where they can ask questions and feel comfortable. I will encourage my students to see the importance of everything they learn, because believe it or not, they will encounter a situation where they will need that knowledge. I am excited for what the future holds!
Tom Johnson- Don’t Let Them Take the Pencils Home!
Tom Johnson’s post, Don’t let Them Take the Pencils Home! was very interesting. I will be honest, I had to read it quite a few times and read numerous comments and posts to really understand what was going on, but it clicked! In this post, Tom is explaining a conversation that involves something more than just pencils. This post is about the importance of creativity and substance in and out of the classroom. One of the people in this conversation was only seeing the “problem” of pencils, and not seeing the big picture. The teacher in the conversation was trying to point out the importance of what the pencils can produce! I was interested in this post because it shows just how shallow-minded we can be as people. As a future educator, I will strive to keep my classroom a comfortable, engaging place.

C4T #3- Post #1
This week I am assigned to Beth Knittle's blog, Beth's Thoughts on Technology in the Classroom. In her blog post, Beth discussed the topic of schools developing their curriculum. Here is my post:
Beth,
My name is Lindsay Curtis, and I too am from the University of South Alabama, and a part of the EDM 310 class. I am ever amazed at the way technology is shaping our lives. As a future educator, I have to ask myself, am I prepared for the future of education? Thoughts like yours encourage me that the future classroom will be a place of engagement and exciting learning! I am eager to see what the future holds! Thank you for your post!
I enjoyed reading Beth's blog posts, she is a refreshing writer!
This week I am assigned to Beth's blog again, and since she did not have a recent post, I commented on one of Dr. Strange's posts. His post was "Lecture Part 1". This was my post:
Dr. Strange, I have finally got around to reading this post! Thank you for letting me participate in place of a C4T assignment! I have talked with my friend, Keeley Bryan (who has posted above) and we see eye to eye on the debate of lecture. "Lecture, research, and discussion...". When I think about my career as a future educator I can't help but to be aware of the different learning styles that every student will possess. Personally, I love a lecture class. I know that it may sound crazy, but I love to write notes while hearing someone speak about a subject. However, I note that my future students will most likely not share my views. (haha)
What I am getting to is that I want my classroom to be a classroom of engagement, whether my students are listening to me talk passionately about a subject, or working in collaborative groups, I will find a way to encourage them and keep their attention. I believe...no, I know that EDM 310 is preparing me in ways that I could have never imagined. The things that I am learning are those engagement tools. Thank you for everything you do, Dr. Strange!

Strange!

Mr. McClung's Post- What I've Learned This Year (2008-2009)
In Mr. McClung's post, he discusses different things that he has learned over the year teaching. Many of the things that he mentioned in his post are things that I have taken time to think about as a future educator. Mr. McClung discusses the fact that the classroom is not all about him, the teacher. I am humbled that as a teacher, I have the duty to help, guide, and mentor my students. I see that every student comes to the classroom with prior experiences and knowledge, and I am to guide them to think deeper.
Perfection is something that Mr. McClung says that all teachers want to achieve with lessons and overall classroom time. I think about my future classroom, and how I will execute discussions and lessons. Let me put it this way....I know that I will never be perfect. The perfect teacher is Christ, and through him I will be the best educator I can be.
Being a student and part-time worker, I can relate to Mr. McClung's mention of work tension. He says that communication is key. That is right! I see time and time again that communicating and talking the issue out can relieve stress and solve the problem quicker. He also talks about how teachers set the bar of expectations high for students. I know that as a future educator and parent (one day), I will set expectations that my students and children will not always achieve. Encouragement and care when those expectations are not met are important. I will never belittle a student or child, I will always encourage hard work and perseverance.
I was wondering when Mr. McClung would mention something about my old friend, technology! (Or should I say, new friend..ha ha) He explains not to be afraid of technology! I am warming up to all of the cool and exciting things that technology does and will continue to do in the classroom.
Throughout his school year, he has learned to listen to his students. Doesn't every student have a different view and opinion? Doesn't every student learn in a different way? In order to understand our students, we need to listen to them. The last point that he talks about is to never stop learning. We have to be a sponge in this word, soak up all we can!
I really enjoyed reading what Mr. McClung learned that year of his teaching career. It was neat to read the thoughts of a teacher in the beginning years of his career.
Mr. McClung's Post- What I Have Learned This Year (2009-2010)
This year is Mr. McClung's second full year of teaching, and his refection is as interesting as the last! The first point that he discusses is to adapt to situations. He explains that he was forced out of his comfort zone this particular year because he was teaching junior high, and on top of that- Social Studies and History classes. He saw that the junior high students were more independent compared to the 6th graders that he taught the year before. Mr. McClung mentions to never get comfortable, and that change makes teachers better. I see that as a future educator I will be faced with many things. I know that I will have to adapt to the school I work in, and be able to adapt to the subjects and students that I will be teaching. Change is a good thing!
He realized this year that his students had never been taught to "think for themselves". I look back at my passive high school experience, and see that I was not encouraged to think for myself. I will encourage my students to see a problem or issue, and THINK through it! School moms....I believe that my mom would be considered one of those. He says to become good friends with a school mom, they can really help you out. I see this play out in my husband's work situation. My husband teaches and coaches at a high school, and he has become great friends with some of the cute little old ladies in the front office. They take care of him! I will keep this advice in mind!
Don't be afraid to be passionate about a subject! Back to my husband... he is VERY passionate about Math- and his students know it. He is a handsome, crazy, Math nerd. Mr. McClung says that he is "willing to do anything to make the sell". I must let my students know that I am excited and care about what I am teaching them.
I am not much of a control freak, but who knows what will happen when I step into my classroom. I am taking this nice man's advice- seeing what is important and deciding what is not so important will save me time and headache. Also, I need to be consistent. It is important to be consistent with everything in life, I feel. I am a work in progress, just like Mr. McClung, and I always will be!

This is How We Dream, Parts 1&2
In the videos, This is How We Learn Parts 1&2, Dr. Richard Miller gives presentations on multimedia writing. I was in awe of his presentation itself, I had trouble listening to what he was discussing! I feel that technology is definitely shaping many aspects of our lives, especially writing. When watching these videos, I can't help but to ask myself am I ready? I remember back to when I first used word processor. Man, was it cool! Little did I know I would enroll in a class called EDM 310, that is constantly introducing programs and such that word doesn't hold a candle to! As a future educator, I think that with experience with such programs would prepare me for writing with different multimedia technologies.
As for my students, I think that there is no doubt that students are ready for this type of learning, thinking, and writing. It seems word processor is becoming a thing of the past! Students are always eager to learn when it involves something- such as technology that they are interested in. Now that I think about it, I really wouldn't call technology an interest, I would go so far as to say that for today's youth, technology is life!
While watching Dr. Miller's video and hearing so many other's thoughts, I am confirmed more and more of how serious I need to be about technology and how it is implemented in the classroom. If I plan to teach effectively, I will need the skills and attitudes of a technological literate educator. I do not have to sacrifice my old-fashioned way of thinking, I can mix it up with technology!
Carly Pugh's Blog Post #12
After reading Carly Pugh's Blog Post #12, the first thing I thought was wow! This gal can write. If she wrote a book, I would read it! Her wit and intelligence is something I feel makes a great writer. I too see why this came very close to what Dr. Miller was discussing in the videos. Carly devoted her time to see that this post was a display of her educational philosophy, and threw in some cool things. The assignment that she came up with was a great representation of multimedia writing because while doing the assignment/project, the student would be able to write their own story about their teaching philosophy through pictures, video, links, etc. This is truly awesome!
The Chipper Series & EDM 310 for dummies
In the The Chipper Series Video, Chipper and Dr. Strange are having a conversation about EDM 310. Chipper has not been doing her assignments, and has not been on time with her work. I have realized that EDM 310 is and should be one of my top priorities this semsester, not just because of the amount of work, but the importance of my time management.
Likewise, in the EDM 310 for Dummies Video, some students are explaining the ins and outs of EDM 310. This video is hilarious, and making a EDM 310 manual would be fun! These two videos did give me a glance of what I should expect while taking EDM 310 this semester, and how to succeed!
As far as my interest in making videos, I think that it would be fun to make a video portraying a "traditional" classroom without technology, and compare it to the classroom of the future. I would have the video focus on the engagement of the students in the classroom, and how technology is shaping the lives of young students today. I see the teacher asking the students to turn their books to page 30, and the students asking the teacher what a "book" is. I think it would be a funny video, and it would also show how education is developing into a tech-savy field.
Learn to Change, Change to Learn
In the video, Learn to Change, Change to Learn, distinguished educators discussed the reality of how education is changing. Throughout these weeks in EDM 310, I have seen and heard many things that point educators in the way of the change of education. I as a future educator see the importance of that change that is happening everyday. One thing that I loved about this video was that they not only talked about the changes in technology that are effecting education, they talked about the way students are reacting to the "traditional" classroom.
The individuals in the video mentioned that the classroom should not be confined to just the four walls of the classroom, but to the whole world! They mentioned museums, and active learning. Walking around, gathering information... being active. My high school experience was passive, I have said that many times. I will strive to be the best educator I can be with my student's interests in mind.
Scavenger Hunt 2.0
#1--- Locate a tool that is similar to Twitter/Facebook and provides a social platform for teachers, parents, and students. Create an account as a teacher and write a paragraph or two about how you could use this site in your classroom. Check!
Edmodo is the tool that I have found that is similar to Facebook and Twitter. I have created an account as a teacher, and I see all the cool things that I could use in my classroom! With this tool, I can write notes, alerts, post assignments, quizzes, and polls. I can create a group discussion with my students and their parents. Also, I am able to connect with other teachers. This tool would be great because it is very organized! I am able to send notifications out to my students and parents, and they are able to reply back. Also, I can upload or create a quiz for my students to use as homework or a home review for a test. This is would be very helpful for the students to have a fun review of material at home.
#2---Find a tool to make-your-own comic strip. Create a comic and post a picture of it in your blog.
Check!
The tool that I have found to make my comic strip is Make Beliefs Comix. Here is my comic!
#3----Find a tool that you have never used. Summarize some of it's special features. Check! Gizmoz and Digimi are video tools that I have never used before. With these tools, you are able to create your oen avatar with expressions, clothing, hair, eyes, and makeup. Every setting has a different transformation and morph. Some of these tools are used for game developers, and they offer game developing kits!

PLN Post #1- Progress Report
Over the next few weeks, I will be gathering resources for my PLN.These resources will be tools and mostly people that will be in my Personal Learning Network. My learning network will extend out of the 4 walls of the University. So far, I have been researching on Health Education. I am trying to compile all of my information to make a few lists to maybe contact these people by email, twitter, and Facebook. I have been thinking, and it would make sense to make note of professors here at the University to include in my PLN. When I find someone that I think would be a great resource, I will gather their contact information. For websites that I want to use as resources, I will research them to see if they are credible, and research the people who are behind the websites. Here we go!

This week I am assigned to Mrs. Dorothy Burt's blog, Manaiakalina. Her most recent post was about printing individual blog out into a book. Dorothy has done this and given the printed blog to people as gifts and keepsakes. This is a very interesting blog post! Below is my comment:
Hi!
My name is Lindsay Curtis, and like the students above, I too am from the University of South Alabama, majoring in Health Education. I would have never thought of printing out blogs! Now that I think of it, it really would be a great gift, and a keepsake. Even though I am required to keep this blog for my class, EDM 310- I feel that I will keep blogging! I like reading and exploring the thoughts and ideas of others all around the world! By printing out the blog, it kind of tells a story! I know that at the end of the semester, I could probably print out my blog, and see how my posts improved over the semester! Thank you for your post and ideas!
Have a great week!

This week, I returned to the teacher's blog, and read her most recent blog post. I was pleased to see a post on Netbooks, and the effect they are having on students. Here is the link to her blog post: Netbooks Post
Below is my comment:
Hi! It is Lindsay Curtis, once again, from the University of South Alabama Education Dept. I really enjoyed reading this post. I haven't had any experience on a Netbook, but I am aware of the impact that technology in general can have on education. Just by taking this technology class, EDM 310- I see how interesting and fun schoolwork and homework can be! As a future educator, I will strive to make learning fun and exciting for my students. Thank you for your post!

The Networked Student- By: Wendy Drexler
In the video, The Networked Student by Wendy Drexler, the Networked Student is introduced. This student does not use textbooks, and does not attend many lectures. Connectivism is a concept that I was introduced to for the first time while watching this video. The networked student learns through all means of technology. He/she blogs about opinions, and what they have learned, and they listen to podcasts from any professor they want.
I think that this video is very interesting, but at the same time, gloomy. I use the word gloomy because of the role that the teacher plays. The question at the end of the video is "What role does the teacher play?", and the answer is guidance, communication, and helping distinguish good from bad resources. I have very mixed emotions on the concept of the networked student. I might as well say that the concept of a networked student is a reality. I take college courses where the teacher is no more than for guidance and communication. I benefit from technology, we all do, but the teacher , teaches. I appreciate technology, I really do... but too much of something can have negative effects.
A 7th Grader's Personal Learning Environment
In the video A 7th Grader's Personal Learning Environment, a 7th grader practically gave you a tour of what a day at school entails for her and her classmates. I can see how this video relates to Wendy's video above because this shows a day as a networked student. The student walked through how she made presentations and how she is able to organize all of her work.
When I compare her PLE to my PLN, it is very different. (Except for this class, EDM310.) In all of my classes, I have bookwork, professors who lecture, and tests to take every few weeks. Believe it or not, I am satisfied with my current PLE. Granted I am a 90 year-old woman trapped in a 20 year-old body...call me old-fashioned, I don't care. I like lecture. I also like technology---- just in moderation. I like this video. It depicts the networked student perfectly.

For the C4K assignment this week, I was assigned to Alex’s blog. In his most recent blog post, he wrote a scary story called, “The Girl in the White Gown.” I commented on his post by saying that I like to read scary books, but I don’t like to watch scary movies. I also stated that he is doing a great job on his blog, and I asked him what his favorite scary movie or book is. This is a very interesting kid!

For this week's assignment, I was assigned to Robert's blog. Below is my post:
Roberts,
My name is Lindsay Curtis, and I am a junior at the University of South Alabama, located in Mobile, Alabama. I am a Health Education major, and I am taking a class called EDM 310. My blog and our class blog can be found at http://www.edm310.blogspot.com/, and http://curtislindsayedm310.blogspot.com/. In this class, we are learning how to use different technologies to learn more about how we can use technology in the classroom. I am assigned to your blog this week, and I must say that your post is interesting! Your Grandma's party sounds like it was very fun! I love to swim and spend time with my family. I bet your sister was glad that her tooth came out! I remember one time I swallowed one of my loose teeth!
I really enjoyed reading your post! You are more than welcome to check out my blog! Have a great day!
-Lindsay Curtis
I really enjoyed reading his blog post. He said that we went to Coco Key with his family, and they had a party for his Grandma. He also mentioned that they went swimming, and his sister lost her tooth! I told him what a pleasure it was to share his blog with me. I also gave him the links to my blog, and the EDM 310 class blog.

In this class, we learn how to blog and use many other means of technology! One of the parts of my class is commenting on other people's blogs, and I am assigned to yours this week!
I am sorry that you were sick on your break! I hope your Uncle is feeling better too! I had a short break from school this past week, and my family went on vacation to West Virginia, to Snoeshoe, a ski resort. It was so much fun! It was my first time to ski and be in snow! I loved the cold weather there on the mountain! That is what I did during my break! Thank you for your posts, you are doing great!
Visit my blog and our class blog sometime! Here are the links, :) ---

Ellie was asking her peers to respond to her post by telling her what they did over their break. Some students responded by telling her they did very exciting things such as going to the zoo! One friend stated that they had a bad cough and headache! Aw man!

This week, I was assigned to "Domo Animate"/ "Epic Dude's" blog. This kid loves video games and animating! This was his post, and my comment:
I went to this website called www.DomoAnimate.com. I actually made my own animations. I made four videos. My favorite one I made is Domo The Legendary Cop. I’m a big fan of Jexx. He makes cool Domo videos. My newest animation is The 2012 Domo Olympics. My first animation was A Very Domo Christmas. If you want to check out my videos search TheMostEpicDomoOfAll.

Randy Pausch's Last Lecture
After reflecting on Randy Pausch's Last Lecture, it is clear to see what an inspiration he has been to myself and millions of others around the world. In this last lecture, Randy speaks on many different topics, both personal and professional. There are many things that he discussed that are worthy of repeating, and definitely worthy of remembrance in my future career as a teacher, mentor, and leader. We all have dreams, whether big or small, we all have them. Everyone should have the permission to dream. Randy sees this in his own life as he communicates his childhood dreams. Sometimes we have stepping stones to jump over before we can achieve goal or task. "Brick walls", man oh man they seem to be put up everywhere when you feel like you are close to achieving success. Brick walls are there to push you to greatness, and to shut those out who are not willing to work. As an educator and mentor to my students, I will see brick walls and barriers come up in my student's lives, and I will strive to encourage them and lead them.
I like how Randy compared his life to a football game, and how he mentioned his old coaches. Just as Randy's childhood football coach put boys in unlikely positions, I must think outside the box and think of each student individually and encourage them to step out of their comfort zone. How will you know you could be great at something if you don't try? Enthusiasm. That is a quality I want to possess as a teacher- Randy exhibits enthusiasm. "Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted". This holds true to my heart. Experience is important. Something that I say all the time to my husband is, "The important things are important." Experience is important. Experience is what makes the difference. Even as a very experienced teacher years and years down the road, I will STILL be experiencing so many new things. I will learn from students, just as Randy said.
It is clear to see that Randy's doings in the virtual reality world are nothing to be just put aside. This man has drive. After applying to different schools, different jobs, and whatever else he could get his hands on- he was sometimes denied. He never gave up. I must strive to never give up on my students. If I stop critiquing them, I have stopped caring, which is a tragedy.
By bringing together the program Building a Virtual World, Randy was able to bring 50 students from all different programs in the University to make a project-based class that was all group work. This was a huge hit around school. Randy wasn't scared to step out of his comfort zone... he was able to fight for virtual worlds for the sake of educating students in a fun, exciting way! I want my students to have fun while learning. I want them to see that learning is not a passive experience, but an exciting world!
I could seriously type on and on about Randy and his awesome stories and accomplishments. This last lecture is one that I will never forget!

Don't Teach Your Kids This Stuff. Please? By: Dr. Scott McLeod
The blog post by Dr. Scott McLeod, a professor at Iowa State University, Don't Teach Your Kids This Stuff. Please? was very interesting. Dr. McLeod argues that students who have been educated without technology will be at an advantage in the future, compared to students that have not. I agree and disagree with his point at the same time. Yes, technology has it's place inside the classroom, but the amount of emphasis spent on technology, I feel, doesn't give a student an advantage or disadvantage.
Also, with a high percentage of today's youth learning and everyday experiencing the technology around them, a need for instruction with technological advancements will not be needed. The future is coming fast, and students will be able to operate things that we can't even imagine.
Videos- Travis Allen
After watching Allen's two videos, The ischool Intuitive and Travis Allen's Zeitgeist Young Minds entry (Mobile Learning), I was awakened to the power (sometimes scary power) that technology has over education, and to some extent- our lives. Seeing education becoming more and more driven by technology in today's age, I can't imagine what this means for the next few generations. I think about this class, EDM 310 as an example. This class would not exist if education was not heading towards technology driven techniques. Dr. Strange sees the need and importance of future educators to become aware of the teaching world that they will be stepping into years ahead. Am I ready? Are you?
Eric Witacre's Virtual Choir
Wow!!!! Eric Witacre's Virtual Choir is one of the coolest performances that I have ever seen or heard. I love music, and I applaud this video! This is just another example of how technology really can play a neat role in our lives. Bringing together this wonderful choir put a smile on my face. This is a beautiful video! I wish I were a part, but I am not a singer... Lalalala!
Teaching in the 21st Century By: Kevin Roberts
The video, Teaching in the 21st Century, by Kevin Roberts was a striking video. I do agree that emphasis needs to b put on the student, with a student-centered approach, but the teacher still does have some responsibility in guiding and encouraging students. When I look back on my career as a student, I see that it took effort on both sides- I had to learn from the instructor, but also had to find the best way to learn and apply the material to my life so that I could gain knowledge. As a future educator, I must strive to keep the student's interests in mind, while challenging my students to develop a learning style that fits best for them.
Reading Rockets
Reading Rockets is a wonderful website that is useful for anyone in the education realm. I love coming across resources like Reading Rockets that offer assistance on learning strategies. After browsing all the different tools on the website, there was one that helps with reading comprehension called Jigsaw. I see reading comprehension as a challenge to many students, including myself at times! With this tool, students are able to take parts of a story, and put the story together like a puzzle! This seems like a wonderful activity, useful to any classroom!

Blog Post #4
Langwitches- Podcasting With First Grade
Within the Langwitches Blog, there was an article/video where the teacher explained that her students enjoyed a podcast done by some second grade students. The teacher stated that "having an audience matters", so these first graders were on a mission to make a podcast of their own! These students were ready for someone to enjoy all the hard work that they put into the podcast! On the blog is a video where the students are interacting with a program for Mac called garageband. In this program, you can edit, add music, sounds, and many other things to podcasts and recordings. The teacher was so delighted that the students were engaged in this activity. After listening to the podcast on the blog, I was tickled to death! These first graders really did construct a wonderful podcast! It was really cute and funny how they went into garageband and added all the sound effects as each student spoke. Great work!

Harry Dell- The Benefits of Podcasting in the Classroom
In the video/article by Harry Dell, The benefits of Podcasting in the Classroom, Harry explains how beneficial podcasting can be in the areas of student engagement and learning. Some of the points that Harry covered were as follows. Podcast make interacting with students outside of the classroom possible. Today's student knows a lot of technology, and podcasts make that knowledge come to life in the classroom. Podcasts encourage project-based learning, which leads to a more non-traditional learning situation where the lesson is student-based, rather than teacher-based. They also promote creativity and innovation, where students can make the project their own, and use their strengths to make the presentation. One last point is that parents can view the student's work.
From personal experience, I have only had one interaction with podcasts since I have been at the University of South Alabama. I liked the idea of a podcast so I could go back and listen to the lecture again and again until I felt comfortable with the material. I vote yes to podcasts!
Judy Scarf- Podcast Collection
In Judy Scarf's web page, she gives information on what podcasts are, and how they are beneficial. She explains that a podcast is a "radio-style" talk show. She too realizes that students love them! She gives tips on how to construct a successful podcast. I will be sure to implement her strategies in my future classroom and podcasts:
- Make sure that the students and myself are familiar with the software
- Have a list of topics ready
- Allow plenty of time for completion
- Invite people to listen to the finished product

I am assigned to Will Deyamport's blog, Peopology. It is a blog that posts about various topics such as education, technology, leadership, and many other topics. The post that I read on his blog was an interview with a makeup artist and editor, Melissa Rich. Throughout the interview, Melissa expressed her love for beauty, and the passion that she has to make people feel beautiful. I expressed to Mr. Deyamport my passion for education, and how as a Health teacher I can too encourage my students in health, fitness, well-being, and overall self-esteem. I enjoyed reading his blog, and I am excited to get interacting!

Mr. Deyamport,
The post above probably doesn't make any since considering my comment that was supposed to go before it did not post! Let's try this again... :)

Our class blog is found at http://edm310.blogspot.com/ and my blog can be found at http://curtislindsayedm310.blogspot.com/. I am assigned to your blog for this semester, and I am excited to start interacting online. I have never used a blog before, (hints the above comment) so this is all new to me!
I read your interview with Melissa Rich, and it was wonderful! Being a woman, I can relate to Melissa's love for the beauty industry, it is in our blood! Being a future health educator, I plan to promote well-being, health, and fitness. I am aware that some students won't have very high self-esteem, and I want to make the classroom a warming place for that student to get plugged in, Just as Melissa uses her love for beauty as a door to influence others, I will strive to influence my students in a positive way! Melissa is a beautiful woman, inside and out! Thank you for your interview, and for your time!
I think that I will enjoy my blogging experience with you! It is pretty amazing how much technology has shaped our lives. What would you say is your favorite technological advancement?
Thank you for your time and posts!

This week the post that I commented on on Mr. Deyamport’s blog was called “So You Want to be a Doctor When you Grow up: Tips for Educators Considering Doctoral Work. Mr. Deyamport commented on my last post, and he responded very nicely. In my last post from last week, I asked him what technological advancement was his favorite, and he said that the Internet was by far the best because it has revolutionized the world. I commented back agreeing that the Internet has revolutionized the world, so much it is scary!
For this week’s post, I told Mr. Deyamport that I know many people that are pursuing doctorates and furthering their education. His post contained information to look for when choosing a doctorate program, and ways to make the schooling process a little smoother. Dissertations are a topic that he talked about in his post, and he stated that in order to make the dissertation go a little smoother, the student needs to pick a subject that they are passionate about. I commented by agreeing with him. I enjoyed reading Mr. Deyamport’s post, and I plan to keep up with his blog!
Mr. Deyamport,
I hope that you are having a great week! I enjoyed reading this post. I have many friends and family that are pursuing doctorates, and furthering their education. I have heard that the dissertation process really is the most challenging. Pursuing a subject that you are passionate about makes sense, and really would make the process smoother. I am thinking about pursuing a Masters, and who knows...maybe a doctorate! Thank you again for your post! I will be in touch!

For C4C #2, I was assigned to Lateria Smiley’s blog. After reading her responses on the videos that our class was assigned to watch, it was clear that Lateria and I share some of the same views. She pondered what life would be like for her students as a future educator. Will students sign into computers when they enter class? What will the classroom look like? These are also questions that I have thought about the past few days. Lateria also sees that if you aren’t quite up to par on the technology of today, not to get yourself down. It is important as a future educator to be familiar with the technology so that you can teach your students effectively. I enjoyed reading Lateria’s blog post #2, it was a pleasure!

Peer Review- Public Comment
Before peer reviewing Lateria Smiley's Blog Post #2, I tried to decide whether to peer review on her page directly where the public could see, or whether I should email or message her privately. I feel that peer review is a great way to keep one another accountable with grammar, clarity, and overall writing quality. Publicly reviewing Lateria's blog post I felt, was a great way to let her know what I was thinking, and to let others read the review. I enjoyed reading her post, she had some wonderful thoughts!
If I were in a authoritative position in the education system, I would be disturbed by this video. Who knew old fashioned education techniques don't work? The students in this video made it sound like the classroom is a torture chamber. (Although as a student, we all think that sometimes.) I feel that professors would see this video and see that there is a wake up call that needs to be made in the way we educate students.

Technology in Special Education
After watching the video, Technology in Special Education, it is clear to see that technology is making a great difference in Special Education. Without technology in the classroom, classroom activities can become difficult, and technology helps this area of difficulty in many ways. Communication is one area that technology makes easier and more efficient. Some students cannot speak clearly or have trouble expressing ideas. With a computer or activity pad, the students can type out words to make sentences to communicate more effectively.
Also, technology makes assignments easier and time efficient for students. Some students that might have motor problems will take more time with written work. With a portable mouse that can be pointed to letters, the student can do his or her work twice as fast has if they had dome it by hand. The students in this video not only are excited about the technology, they value it. They see the purpose of making their assignments faster and more efficient, and they know that they are gaining valuable experience for the future.
As a future educator, I would see that all my students understand the technology and the use of it in the classroom. For special needs children in my classroom, I would make sure that my students can use the technology effectively, and make sure that they can benefit from it. I know that with technology in the classroom, it will open a door for a better relationship between students and teachers in regards to classwork experiences, and communication.
How the iPad Works With Academics for Autism
After watching the video, How the iPad Works With Academics for Autism, it was neat to see how big a role the iPad can play in education for children with autism and other special needs. I browsed the Apple website for apps that I feel that I could use in my classroom with special needs students. One of the apps that I found was the Fish School in HD app. This app allows students to recognize letters, shapes, and numbers by the colorful fish that form them. This would be a great app to include in classroom activities for students with special needs because of the bright colors, cute fish, and fun scenery that this app has to offer.
Gary Hayes Social Media Count
Gary Hayes' website, Gary's Social Media Count was full of overwhelming facts! After watching the numbers rise on social media joins, tweets, new accounts, searches, and many other things, let's say I had a bit of a headache. Mr. Hayes has opened my eyes to the virtual world- which is really becoming the real world. As a future educator, I see that technology is all around, and it is not going anywhere! This will effect my career in many ways. Not only will the classroom look different in many ways in regards to the teaching methods, but the students themselves will have an understanding of the technology around them, and how they can use it effectively. I as a student and future educator will strive to keep myself educated on the technology that is, and is to come.
Michael Wesch- A Vision of Students Today
Michael Wecsh, along with Anthropology students at the University of Kansas constructed a video,
A Vision of Students today, that gave me chills. The students held up signs to describe certain things related to the education of today that they are engaged in. Some students held up papers stating how many hours they spent on facebook, youtube, and other Internet sites. Some students held up papers explaining that they spend hundreds of dollars on textbooks that they will never open. This video would send a strong message to educators, professors, and heads of schools.
